Face it, you didn't do your research.

Unless you did, in which case good for you. I didn’t. I thought I had. I suspect a lot of people are that way but get lucky.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

What I mean is this. I thought I did my research, I looked up many how-to’s and thought I had my servo install nailed. However, because I failed to check for things that could go wrong, I ended up with a servo that looks like THIS:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

That’s the result of not checking first, and not following up hiccups others have had. There’s a snap-ring there that holds the servo cap on. I hadn’t seated it properly. I had read that it was a pain to get on, but it went on quite smoothly for me. I thought. Turns out I got the ends in and it felt like it snapped in, but the outside (opposite the cut ends, the body of the “C”) never fully seated. End result, that side of the cap gave way and the inner housing for the 2nd apply piston is jammed in the bore at an angle. If it wasn’t for the heat shield (not pictured, I’d already removed it again), I’d have lost a lot more than tranny fluid.

Live and learn, I guess. Figured I might as well share a lesson that could help others here. Do your research thoroughly. Don’t just look up how-to’s, the people who wrote them had everything go smoothly—look for potential problems as well. If you see a common hiccup, even between installs that were successful, follow it up and see if anyone has had bigger issues from the same source.

Sad GN for your time. I just wanna drive something, and most of all my truck.

Tough break. Is this the kind of thing you can take apart and put back together to fix or do you need to buy a new part?

I don’t know yet, and that’s the worst part.

I couldn’t do anything myself, so it’s going to the shop. They should be able to get it free, however:

- I may need to order a new servo if this one got bent or scored badly.

- I don’t know how the bore actually came off. It will at least need some polishing to remove any potential scoring or scratching.

The part is cheap, anyway. What really pisses me off is that it was so preventable. Just a simple double check, but I was so excited to get it on the road and try it out that I rushed the last step. Even then, I followed the trail of trans fluid on foot, and it looks like it was leaking on and off from the moment I set off. I went to the store with it, and in the spot I parked there was a large puddle like I left on the road outside the house. I noticed it then because of the smoke from the trans fluid burning off the exhaust. If I’d just looked back at the store, this wouldn’t have happened. It was shifting fine on the way to the store, so I obviously wasn’t going hard enough to make it jam—just leak. I ratted it coming out of the parking lot, and that’s where I jammed it. If I’d looked back and seen the smoke I would’ve taken it easy on the way home and been able to fix it myself.

Ugh, such a heartbreak. I did half of a suspension install in my miata this weekend and started out by going back and forth in the drive way.... then around the block slowly, then around the block at a normal pace 2 times, then a fast pace, then came home and reinspected everything, then finally felt safe enough to go to a close by store. But all that paranoia comes from having shit break on me a mile from home over and over again!

If it’s really super cheap and you’re paying shop labor anyway... maybe just replace it. But again, I’ve grown paranoid working on cars ;)

Even with the Canadian dollar being so low, it’s about $65 including shipping. Actually, the shipping is worth more than the part. The servo is $19.99 US.

I totally get the paranoia. The last mod I did gave me a panic attack afterwards, but it’s fine.
